Upper Ottawa River Race
Information

Registration

  • All registration and entry fees can be completed and paid at www.upperottawariverrace.ca
  • Registration must be completed and all payments made prior to August 4th, 2017 no later than midnight.
  • Registration forms will be processed only if accompanied by full payment of registration fees. Cancellations received in writing by July 1st, 2017 will be refunded in full, less a 25 % cancellation fee. No refunds will be issued for cancellations received after that date. Only cancellations received in writing will be processed.
  • The Upper Ottawa River Race & Paddle Festival reserves the right to cancel this event or portions due to insufficient registration and any circumstances beyond their control, in which case registration fees will be refunded in full.
  • All registered race participants (13km, 4km) will receive a bib number, an event shirt, ticket for after race meal, fruit and drinks upon arrival at the finish line, swag bag and the opportunity to participate in many after race activities and just have fun with other paddlers! The chance to win prizes and unique trophies for those who place 1st and 2nd in a variety of categories (boat or board, age, gender) as well as the chance to win other prizes throughout the event.

Safety

  • Paddling equipment, personal floatation devices, safety kits and whistles will NOT be provided by the Upper Ottawa River Race. These items must be provided by the racer and in their possession during the race at all times.
  • All participants MUST wear a CSA approved personal floatation device with a whistle attached to the front.
  • Participants MUST check in at least one hour before their start time. Welcome packages will be provided and registrants MUST sign a waiver of liability and release form at this time. Participants MUST attend a pre-event briefing that will be held before event start time(s).
  • Participants MUST ensure that their bib race number is visible at all times.
  • Participants MUST complete the event without assistance.
  • At checkpoints, participants MUST identify themselves to the check-point attendant(s). This is to ensure the safety of all participants and volunteers on the river.
  • All participants MUST display courtesy to fellow competitors, avoiding interference and boat or paddle contact.
  • Participants MUST attend a pre-event briefing that will be held before event start time(s) and pay close attention to the information given to paddlers by the race organizer and the starting official
  • In the case of capsizing, stay with your canoe, kayak, sup. If you require assistance flag down the race safety boaters for aid. If you are able to continue you can swim to shore and bail out your boat (canoe or kayak)/ (sup- remount or drag to shore) then continue with the race.
  • If at any time you ou decide not to complete the race once started – please inform the safety boaters and the race organizers at the finish area.

Distances

  • 13 KM Advanced Class (18+)
    • This category is reserved for experienced to advanced paddlers that have a strong knowledge and previous experience of paddling distances over 10km. Must be knowledgable about self rescue and various adverse open water conditions including wind and waves.
    • The race leaves from Petawawa Point Beach in Petawawa and finishes at Riverside Park Beach in Pembroke, a shuttle service will be in place to transport racers.
  • 4 KM Intermediate Class
    • This category is for intermediate to novice experienced paddlers who have been paddling for a short time. Paddlers must have a basic knowledge of paddling and experience paddling short distances of at least 2 KM. The shorter distance races have been designed to have paddlers in a save monitored area.
    • Race is a double loop starting and finishing at Riverside Park Beach in Pembroke.
  • 1 KM Kids Class
    • This category is for kids who have minimal experience but must be able to swim and paddle 1 KM.
    • The shorter distance races have been designed to have paddlers in a save monitored area.
    • Race is a single loop starting and finishing at Riverside Park Beach in Pembroke.

Racers will be divided into various categories according to board or boat (Canoe, Kayak, SUP), distance (13km,4km,1km), gender (male,female) and age (Under 18,18 to 44,45+)

Recommendations

  • All participants are encouraged to carry sunscreen, insect repellant, a hat, sunglasses and a wind-shell.
  • All participants are encouraged to bring rain gear.
  • All participants are encouraged to carry energy snacks and drinking water/juice. One liter per hour is recommended.
  • All participants are encouraged to carry a bilge pump (canoe/kayak)

Waiver

All participants must sign a release of liability and waiver form in person upon registration at the event. Any participants under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian present to sign the waiver on their behalf.
